Diets Not Working, Sometimes Causing Weight Gain, Finds New Study

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Following a diet isn`t always the best way to lose weight, concluded University of California researchers after having reviewed many studies on how efficient diets are.

The studies’ results show that many people regained the weight they lost after ending the diet, and in some cases even more, said Traci Mann, lead author of the study. Initially, dieters may lose up to ten percent of their body weight, but the weight lost is soon regained, she continued. Most of the participants regained weight in the longer term, even though some maintained their weight after the diet ended.

Diets cannot provide health benefits or definitive weight loss, said Dr. Mann. Mann and her research team wondered if people are better off without following a diet at all.

They discovered that many people would have been better off without trying a diet in order to lose weight. Dieters won`t see substantial changes regarding their weight, and their bodies may suffer from the repeated lost and regain of weight, said Dr Mann.

Repeated weight loss may have unwanted health effects such as diabetes, stroke, cardiovascular disease, or altered immune functions, said Dr Mann. Specialists noticed that up to sixty-six percent of the participants to the reviewed studies regained in the following five years the weight lost through a diet.

Researchers say the situation may be even worse because the figures don`t reflect reality in totality. The key that may help people maintain their weight is working out and eating in moderation. Exercise is important for people who try to sustain weight loss. Studies proved that those who exercised more, lost more weight, said Dr Mann. 4 Abdominal Pitfalls to Avoid

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

If you want to be on top of your six-pack ab game, first eliminate the myths, lies, and deceit you have been fed by the so-called “experts” in the fitness industry.

Let’s face it. A sleek and well-defined midsection is something everyone wants to have. Six-pack abs are mainstream among the fitness community. A sculpted mid-section displays health, vitality, strength, and overall fitness.

If you read any magazine or online article you will be bombarded with an over abundance amount of information on how to achieve six-pack abs. Six-pack ab advertisements have even found their way right to your living room in the form of infomercials.

If you are not careful, you can be literally brainwashed into false ab information, leading you down a road of despair.

If you want to be on top of your six-pack ab game, first eliminate the myths, lies, and deception you have been fed by the so-called “experts” in the fitness industry.

Exotic Abdominal Equipment - Turn on your tube and you will be overwhelmed at the amount of abdominal equipment available. These fancy ab-devices can cost anywhere from 20 bucks to several hundred dollars.

Are they effective? Are they worth it?

Look at some of the top runners. Many elite runners have six-pack abs and some even have eight-pack abs. What is surprising to many people is that many runners don’t even do ab exercises.

Is this shocking?

It shouldn’t be. Everyone has abs. If you can’t see your abs it’s not that you are lacking a unique piece of abdominal equipment, it’s simply because you have a layer of fat covering your abdominals, preventing them from showing.

Hundreds of Crunches - Okay, so we know you don’t need top-dollar exorbitant abdominal equipment to get that well-desired six-pack abdominal region.

The top recommended abdominal exercise, recommend by the leading “experts” are crunches; hundreds of crunches a day.

Crunches are fine and dandy for developing the abdominal area, but it is useless to do hundreds of them. Some people can spend up to 20 minutes doing crunches and their abs still never shine though.

Don’t overdo the crunches. Two to three sets of 10-25 crunches is all you need. Doing endless crunches is not going to make your abs peep through. All crunches will do is strengthen your midsection. When you lower your body fat your abs will be more visible.

Fat Burners - Many people are under the impression that fat burners burn body fat with little or no effort on their part. How nice that would be!

Fat burners can be helpful on a fat-loss program, but only if they are taken correctly and combined with the right nutrition and training program.

Fat burners should be used as a supplement, not the all-or-none factor.

Starving Yourself - Okay, you have the point by now that you need low body fat for your abs to appear. While this is true, you do not want to starve yourself. When you venture onto a starvation diet you aren’t starving your body fat, you are starving your lean muscle tissue.

When your body must feed off its own muscle mass due to starvation your metabolism dramatically declines. This metabolic downgrade leads you to even more stored body fat.

Starving yourself is not the answer to a six-pack abdominal region.

What is the Answer to Achieving Six-Pack Abs? To get your sexy abs to shine you need to feed your body. You should eat a balanced meal (containing a protein and a carbohydrate) every three hours. This speeds up your metabolism and nourishes your body

Drink 8 - 12 ounces of water with meals and between meals. The more water you drink, the more toxins, fat, and sodium you are able to flush out.

Train your abs with a variety of ab-training exercise to prevent boredom. Abs can be trained every other day at best, provided they are not still sore from your previous workout.

Add some cardio to your program. Cardio, too, will help kick up your metabolism. Just be sure to avoid cardio-overdrive, which is doing too much cardio that prevents your body from recovering.

Manage food intake, drink water, and get adequate exercise, and you’ll have a six-pack abdominal region in no time.

Gender Causing Different Predisposition to Obesity

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Sixty-one percent of the population of the United States is obese or overweight, with women making the majority. Certain factors have a different influence, for men and women, over the risk to become overweight or obese.

In the case of women, extra weight may appear because of the fluctuations of the reproductive hormones that show up during pregnancy and menopause .Women are more likely to store more fat than men, because women present a lower basal fat oxidation indicator compared to men. Researchers believe that basal fat oxidation is connected to the loss of fat-free mass for aging women.

Some of the substances that may increase the risk of developing obesity are serotonin, insulin, and leptin. These substances may influence in different ways how men and women are predisposed to gaining weight.

Serotonin, a substance that regulates body temperature, mood, anger, sleep, sexuality, aggression, and appetite, is strongly related to the body mass index (BMI).  When the BMI increases, the level of serotonin decreases. When it comes to weight loss, the difference between men and women is the BMI level that triggers the decrease of serotonin. For women, the amount of serotonin decreases when they reach a BMI that classifies them as “obese”, while for men this happens when their BMI shows they are “overweight”.

Leptin is a product of fat cells and has a role in regulating the energy expenditure and appetite. Leptin levels are higher for women than men at any BMI level. Men may have lower levels of leptin if they have a higher level of testosterone. Specialists believe that leptin levels may influence the body weight starting at puberty. The difference in leptin levels occurs in boys who have a high level of testosterone and girls with higher fat mass.

Pregnancy can also affect leptin levels. The amounts of leptin is higher in women who are pregnant with female fetuses, but not for those pregnant with male fetuses. How Do You Deal With Infant Ear Infection

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Infant ear infection is one of the biggest reasons doctors get a visit from patients. We tell you how it could affect your child.

Dealing with infant ear infection can be a trying time for parents. Unlike older children, babies and infants can’t tell the parent where the problem lies and usually it’s a matter of looking for other factors.

A baby tugging on it’s ears may be cause to suspect ear infection but studies have clearly indicated this is most often not the case.

Infant Ear Infections - Pain Is The Biggest Clue

Ear aches can come on very quickly and the accompanying symptoms will be pain and usually fever. Pain is obviously the biggest giveaway in toddler ear infections because make no mistake, they hurt!

This is one of the reasons if a child continually pulls on it’s ear but appears to be in no discomfort at all that ear infection is usually ruled out. There could be a host of other reasons why the child is tugging it’s ear such as teething, curiosity by the child, itching and yes, even habitual. A little like sucking the thumb. But what does an adult with their first child and no relative experience in this area do? The most obvious course of action is to head to the doctor.

Ear Infections In Babies

It’s always been one of the biggest tell tale signs in detecting all is not right with a baby. Crying and a change in mood. The child usually displays a fair amount of irritability and becomes a little fussy. They’ll cry more often, usually in short sharp bursts. But how do you know if it’s infant ear infection?

If the child has had a cold or flu then this is a major catalyst for developing ear infection. If a fever is also present then a trip to the doctor is the best course of action.

What Causes Infant Ear Infection?

Fluid buid up around the baby’s eardrum accompanied by bacterial build up will lead to ear infection. The reason the build up occurs is because the Eustachian tube can become blocked. Normally fluid will travel through the Eustachian tube and leave the area but when it becomes trapped in the middle ear, it becomes a perfect breeding ground for bacteria. In time, swelling develops around the eardrum followed by pain and an ear infection is born.

Treatment Of Infant Ear Infection

Over half of infant ear infection episodes may improve without treatment. There is a theory that waiting three to four days once a diagnosis has been made could be the best course of action initially but if the symptoms haven’t improved, then treatment intervention is usually pursued.

Debate continues on whether antibiotic treatment is the best course of action although with very young children, doctors will usually play it safe and prescribe them. Associated pain relieving medication may also be suggested to accompany the antibiotic treatment.

Can Human Growth Hormone Treatment Put The Brakes On Aging?

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

It’s one of the biggest debating topics in antiaging…human growth hormone treatment. We tell you more in this revealing report.

Antiaging is a multi billion dollar industry and never before have we seen so much marketing directed towards miracle aging solutions and techniques. But how much credence can you put into most of these claims. Antiaging human growth hormone has been a hot subject for a number of years now yet, despite the illegal banner, other than for specific uses, hanging over the distribution of HGH, the hype continues over it’s many benefits.

What Is HGH?

A human growth hormone or HGH is not a steroid. Growth hormones are actually created by the body in your pituitary gland to stimulate growth in humans and animals, and are also known as somatropin or somatotropin.

The human growth hormone is an anabolic hormone and very simply builds it in mass. This is why steroids which cause muscle growth are called anabolic steroids and could easily be confused with human growth hormones. A person’s natural height increase is the best known effect of a growth hormone, but it is also known to generate other metabolic functions including bone strengthening and calcium regeneration and retention.

Human growth hormones also help to create a solid nitrogen balance in the body by increasing the body’s synthesis of protein. Your body’s ability to synthesize protein is essential to function properly and build much needed muscle.

Did You Know?

Human growth hormone is necessary for growth. During our youth, it is in plentiful supply however, it’s diminishing presence begins once adulthood begins and continues to decline at a steady rate thereafter.

How Reliable Are HGH Studies

I’m a little confused about antiaging human growth hormone. The experts tell us why the general population shouldn’t be coaxed by all the marketing promoting their benefits while those promoting it as the “fountain of youth” swear “black and blue” it’s the answer to halting the aging process. So who do you believe?

Let’s examine the term human growth hormone. Truth is it’s only available on prescription and is meant to treat people with deficiency in the growth area. AIDS and HIV Patients who suffer muscle waste are approved to receive HGH treatment along with children suffering from stunted growth.

Are There Benefits

Sure. While studies have been conducted on the effects of growth hormone there is still a lot of unanswered questions and mystery surrounding the real long term effects of GH. In fact, short term studies indicate an increase in both bone density and muscle mass, an improved outlook such as an improvement in mood as well as an increased capacity to maintain premium exercise levels. It’s also found HGH injection treatment has a positive effect on the human heart. But, does it slow aging?

The jury is still out on this question. Until there is some common ground established by the scientific community and those marketing the benefits of HGH the arguments will continue to rage.

More Sensible Alternatives To GH Treatment

Is HGH treatment really just a dangerous shortcut to “fixing” certain areas of our bodily functions? Understandably, in older people, certain areas of our body begin to slow down but are GH injections really the answer.

Good diet and nutrition has been proven over and over again as a safe and reliable way to give our body cells all the ammunition they need to fight the effects of aging and disease. And as far as building muscle and strength, well, wouldn’t exercise such as weight training in conjunction with proper nutritional intake make more sense?

When Not To Use Baking Soda For Heartburn

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Is baking soda for heartburn a serious relief option for many sufferers? We’ll tell you in this revealing report.

It’s just about in every home and is often overlooked as a remedy for heartburn but baking soda is an effective home remedy which many experts will tell you has the desired effect of relieving heartburn symptoms. Just a diluted half teaspoon in warm water in moderate amounts is all that is required but be careful not to over do it.

Using Baking Soda For Heartburn Sensibly

One thing to remember with heartburn is if it’s at a chronic level in your life and you haven’t seen a doctor then what are you waiting for. Baking soda for heartburn is only a temporary relief option and should be treated as such. Abusing it in large amounts will get you into a lot of bother.

Basically, baking soda acts as an antacid, neutralizing stomach acids that digest food. When producing too much, the feeling of discomfort associated with heartburn and related symptoms becomes a factor. If too much acid is neutralized the body can overreact and you’ll find yourself with even more acid, and in even more pain.

When To Avoid Baking Soda For Heartburn

Check with your doctor before taking baking soda just to be on the cautious side. People with conditions such as high blood pressure would be advised in not going down the baking soda route. Why? Because it contains lots of sodium which will be like waving a red flag at a bull for high blood pressure sufferers. The human body is not accustomed to handling sodium in large amounts and if it is being bombarded with it, then complications can set in especially for high blood pressure sufferers.

When you consider baking soda can be used for several applications, even deodorizing and freshening objects in the home such as kitchen sinks and carpets it may make you think twice about using it as a relief for heartburn but such is the nature of this sodium packed product. Just remember, if you are on a sodium restricted diet, then look for other alternatives to baking soda.

For those without restrictions, just a teaspoon in a glass of lukewarm water, make sure it’s dissolved completely and sip in moderation. It then goes to work on limiting the effects of the symptoms of heartburn you may be experiencing.

Baking Soda Facts

Baking soda has a variety of uses. It is highly recommended as a boost for your regular washing detergent. Not only that, it has excellent deodorizing powers and is said to bring up a clothes wash smelling fresh and clean. Baking soda has an ability to neutralize odors.

The Merit In Baking Soda For Heartburn

It concerns me when people tell me how long they have been using baking soda for heartburn symptoms. Okay, if they are only an occasional sufferer that’s probably fine but to use it on a consistent basis is paramount to lunacy.

Remember, heartburn could be a symptom of something more serious and there is more to do than just sipping baking soda. It’s just a superficial fix. Constant heartburn requires major changes in your lifestyle, eating and drinking habits and yes, even the clothes you wear. So use baking soda for heartburn in moderation and as directed by your doctor but think about the changes you need to make if the condition becomes a constant in your life.

The Real Scoop on Affordable Laser Hair Removal

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Laser hair removal treatment has become a very popular method of hair removal, but unfortunately there are many who have not used this method because of the cost. Believe it or not, there are places that do offer affordable laser hair removal, and having a hair free body no longer has to be a dream. When you are considering hair removal, you want to be sure you consider the cheaper places that offer it as well as the more expensive ones. While price is often a consideration, it is also highly important that you make sure that the quality of your laser hair removal is good as well.

Cheap Laser Hair RemovalThere are some places that advertise that they have cheap laser hair removal. When you are considering these types of places, you need to make sure that you are going to get quality care. Some places that advertise cheap laser hair removal may not be certified in these procedures and you may end up with a job that is not well done. If laser hair removal treatment is not done right it may mean that you need a few more treatments, which in the end could end up costing you even more money. While cheaper rates may sound great, you need to make sure that you are getting quality as well.

Expensive Laser Hair RemovalOn the other side of the picture, there are many places that provide laser hair removal that is more on the expensive side. While laser hair removal treatment is always going to be a fairly expensive procedure, there are some places that may have prices that are astronomical. In many cases the high prices are caused by the prestige of the clinic where you have it done. Although you want to avoid a cheap place that may not provide you with quality laser hair removal, you also will want to avoid paying more than you should as well.

Quality is Most ImportantWhen you are choosing where to go for your laser hair removal needs you need to consider quality. Finding affordable laser hair removal is great, but most importantly you want it to be quality as well. Why pay for laser hair removal that is not done as it should be? You are better off to pay a bit more for quality laser hair removal that is done by a qualified professional than to get a cheaper price at a place that is not certified and does not provide you with good results.

If you are looking for a place to go for your laser hair removal needs, you need to consider both the price and the quality. One without the other will not be a good choice, but when you find a great price and quality laser hair removal technicians, then this is an excellent place for you to go.

Health and Nutrition

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Nutrition, when you boil it all down, it’s basically about what you put in your body. Especially when it comes to the foods you eat. This article has a few things you may need to think over about nourishing your body.

You should eat a healthy, nutritious diet, composed of many different foods from the five food groups. This is the best way to eat because it has the variety of foods that have different vitamins and minerals your body needs. The five main food groups are fruits and veggies, whole grains, low-fat dairy, and lean protein. Fats would be included, but try to stay away from them as much as possible.

Natural veggies should be the leading food in your diet. Even if they may not taste as good as pizza, veggies have more nutritional value that is fundamental for exceptional health. Eating the veggies raw is the best way to go, steaming is the next best because this prevents much of the nutrients from being lost, unlike boiling or other cooking methods.

Whole grains have lots of fiber and vitamins which makes eating them crucial for your body. They are another food that should be eaten daily.

Whole fresh fruits are another beneficial food group for your complete health and nutrition. They contain vitamins and fiber much like veggies do, but fruit is much sweeter which makes them excellent for when your sweet tooth starts acting up.

Another crucial element of nutrition is protein. Protein can be found not only in lean meats and nuts, but also in veggies. Go for smaller portions of meats if you desperately have to have it however, and choose leaner meats such as chicken or fish over red meats such as beef.

Dairy is crucial to keep in your diet as well. It is one of the main sources of calcium which is crucial for keeping your entire body functioning properly. However, you should eat low-fat dairy products to cut down on your fat intake.

As we all know, we should limit our fat intake. So do this by staying away from foods high in fat. Also, try to steer clear of fried foods, processed foods, and foods high in sugar and salt.

Just follow these basics on what to eat and you’ll be one your way to greater nutrition.

Lose Weight Safely with the Mediterranean Diet

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

People from Mediterranean countries such as Greece or Italy have a smaller risk of heart disease and enjoy longer lives, studies have repeatedly showed. Researchers wondered what is the reason for the better health of the Mediterranean people.

Dieticians have found similarities between the diets, level of cholesterol, and heart disease frequency of the populations around the Mediterranean Sea.

The Mediterranean diet is characterized by an emphasis on vegetables, fruits, bread, potatoes, beans, nuts, and seeds. The olive oil is the source of monosaturated fats. The poultry and red meat consumption is limited.

Eggs are allowed for a maximum of four times per week, and wine should be consumed in moderate amounts.

The main meals should be based especially on vegetables. The foods allowed include cereals, pasta, and bread. The food should be fresh, not chemically processed. More flavor can be added to the meals with garlic, onion, oregano, sweet-basil, or savory.

Dieters need to eat fish or seafood at least two times per week. Cheese products and yogurt should be consumed daily because they contain certain bacteria that activates digestion. Extra-virgin olive oil must be used for cooking instead of unhealthy fats.

Corn flower, tomatoes, and fresh peppers are also allowed by the Mediterranean diet. Chicken meat should be consumed once per week or even more seldom, while red meat is allowed only a few times per month. Exactly What Is Microdermabrasion?

Saturday, May 5th, 2007

Microdermabrasion Treatments and methods

What is Microdermabrasion? You have probably met this word often when you were searching for an effective acne treatment. Microdermabrasion is not really new; in fact, it was first introduced in Ancient Egypt. In order to remove minor skin flaws, Egyptian women used to peel the outermost layer of the skin by using fine sand and abrasive marks with alabaster particles. Exfoliation became the trend and since then, women have used several methods and different substances to cleanse and naturally freshen and lighten their skin. In 1985, an Italian specialist performed Microdermabrasion, as we understand it today, for the first time. In modern times, skin problems are now treated with microderm abrasion because it was proven to be effective but more importantly, more people prefer this treatment because of its quick after treatment recovery and low health risk.

For you to understand further what is Microdermabrasion, let us look closely into how it’s being done. Microdermabrasion is an effective, non-surgical way to get rid of skin imperfections by exfoliating the very top layers of the skin. It is a skin resurfacing treatment that works gently in abrading the outermost part of the skin. Microdermabrasion involves a stream of fine micro particles being blasted across the face by a kind of “skin vacuum cleaner”. The powder used varies between different machines and can include crystals of aluminum salts, sodium bicarbonate crystals, or even sodium chloride (table salt) crystals. Movement of these crystals under pressure loosens and partially removes the outermost epidermal layer of the skin. The Aluminum oxide micro crystal abrasion machines or diamond tipped wand gently sandblast your skin, leaving a new, fresh layer underneath thus leaving it smooth and fresh. Micro dermabrasion also helps your skin rejuvenate faster than normal. It is a simple, straight forward, non-invasive procedure that revitalizes dull skin, reduces large pores, erases fine lines and wrinkles, acne scars, reduces mild pigment irregularities (hyperpigmentation), stretch marks and age spots. Likewise, it encourages the production of a new underlying layer of skin cells with higher levels of collagen and elastin, which further improves your skin’s appearance.

Microdermabrasion is much gentler than dermabrasion, which is a more intensive procedure used to treat deeper facial lines, extreme sun damage, and scars. Microdermabrasion is so gentle that it can be performed at home aside from beauty salons, spas and medical or dermatological offices. It is recommended for adults who are in good physical health, with realistic expectations for the outcome of their treatment. People who do not have enough available time to undergo more invasive skin resurfacing treatments such as dermabrasion, laser skin resurfacing, or chemical peels may also be good candidates for microdermabrasion.

Microdermabrasion treatments are safe, quick and are typically without side effects. Treatments are good for almost all skin types, and are excellent for those with sensitivities to chemical procedures. Immediately following your treatment, you may return to your normal daily activities. For optimal results, a series of multiple treatments are recommended. Additional treatments encourage the production of a new layer of skin cells containing higher levels of collagen and elastin, both of which further improve your skin’s appearance. It would be best to consult your dermatologist to fully understand what is Microdermabrasion before undergoing this treatment.
