The Fight Of Osteoporosis Treatment

Friday, July 6th, 2007

Osteoporosis is a debilitating health condition facing many today.

This condition can be horrifically life altering so much that basic daily activities become one of which you are afraid out of fear of sustaining a new fracture. Osteoporosis treatment focuses on increasing both strength and bone density while also preventing further bone loss.

As with many other health conditions, osteoporosis should be a part of an early health screening practice so that diagnosis can be made early in the process.

With an early diagnosis and subsequent aggressive treatment of osteoporosis you have a much better chance of avoiding future fractures. At the present time, osteoporosis treatments offer no cure but that does not mean treatment should be avoided since early intervention can help to keep the situation from worsening.

If you are looking for changes that you can make that will help you to fight the onset or the progression of osteoporosis, there are several easy options that you can start today.

For example, if you want to decrease your osteoporosis risk, then quit or better yet, never start, smoking! Women who smoke show lower levels of estrogen and these lower levels can lead to bone loss. Besides the negative impact on your bones, there is a litany of other negative health conditions associated with smoking. Another option for you to decrease your risk is to eat a healthy and well balanced diet, infused with an adequate amount of calcium and vitamin D. Also avoid alcohol and put down the remote, get up off the couch and exercise.

Ok, so no one really wants to be told to exercise, but recovering from an osteoporotic fracture is much more agonizing than any amount of exercise could ever be. Exercise helps you to improve your overall balance, your general health and your flexibility; all of which can help you reduce your chance of a fall and possibly a bone fracture. Weight-bearing exercises, such as a daily walk, are a good treatment for osteoporosis prevention. Of course, before you start any sort of exercise program you must have clearance from your health care provider.

Osteoporosis treatment may include prescription medications such as Fosamax, Actonel, and Boniva. These medications and others in this class work to prevent more bone loss and increase bone strength. Another choice for osteoporosis medication includes those such as Forteo which work by increasing bone formation.

Once you have a definitive diagnosis of osteoporosis, your healthcare provider must decide the extent of your illness. Once that has been determined, a decision will have to be made to determine if your situation can be treated with alterations in your lifestyle only or if it is so severe that both alterations and medications must be ordered at once.

This serious health concern deserves a serious discussion with your physician, followed by a firm commitment from you to follow the prescribed osteoporosis treatment and to do whatever it takes to stop any further bone loss.

Aggressive and early treatment of arthritis is necessary in order to try to avoid additional joint damage which can lead to further joint limitations and deformities. Holistic therapy for the treatment of arthritis can provide you with some relief from the pain and inflammation of arthritis.

Holistic medicine is based on the theory that diseases occur from multiple root causes and most often can be positively impacted by treating underlying imbalances within the physical, mental and environmental realms.

Holistic medicine is based on the theory that arthritis occurs from a variety of factors and in order to get the best outcome it takes an approach that looks at every aspect of your life. Many holistic physicians employ techniques found in Chinese herbal medicine as a basis of their therapy.

These physicians also focus on stress reduction, proper diet and nutrition, detoxification and the repair of nerves and muscles with the use of acupuncture, chiropractic care, massage and exercise. Those with arthritis as well as many other chronic diseases can benefit from this practice as a compliment to more traditional treatment.

The belief of the Chinese medicine is that disease occurs when obstructions impede the flow of energy to the organs. Chinese herbs are used to restore energy and function to your body since Chinese medicine is based on the belief that if your body’s energy is blocked you cannot be in a state of wellness. Some of those who practice holistic medicine believe that a vegetarian diet can help to reduce your arthritis symptoms.

Some other techniques utilized within holistic medicine include relaxation techniques, such as biofeedback and meditation. Holistic therapy is thought to be incredibly helpful with the complex management of arthritis symptoms and has been shown to be effective.

Natural Acne Remedies Straight From Your Kitchen

Friday, July 6th, 2007

If you suffer from acne and have tried all the topical creams and antibiotics but still have not eradicated your acne then its time to take a look at some home grown natural acne cures. And indeed when it comes to finding home made cures for acne, it seems that there are many of them!

You just need to be prepared for a bit of experimentation first and have the patience to wait a while before your acne clears. Remember, using home made cures means there are no chemicals or harsh substances, so it is likely that your acne won’t be “zapped” within days or weeks.

Also note that most home made treatments for acne are applied topically and are not for consumption. Usually, the treatments vary between face washes, astringent toners and face masks and exfoliants which help slough off dead skin cells.

The other benefit of these treatments is that the side effects are very few, if any at all, due to the products being natural and therefore not toxic.

Just to get you started, here are a few examples. This is an effective treatment for blackheads: use a mixture of lime and milk as a face wash. First bring the milk to a boil and then add the juice from one lime. Mix thoroughly and when cool use it as a face wash.

Another natural acne cure is to use mangos on your face. Soak the mango overnight then peel the skin off and boil the mango in hot water. Once cool, rub it on your face – it will cleanse your pores thoroughly.

Papaya fruit is a favourite and here you would use it raw (instead of boiling it). Mash up the pulp and use it as a face wash, thoroughly massage it into damp skin then wash off with clean water. Something not as exotic but more likely to appear in your larder is the good old potato.

Believe it or not but a raw potato is an ideal acne natural cure and extremely effective for treating whiteheads. Raw potatoes contain sulphur, potassium, phosphurus and protein. The vitamin C content along with the natural starch and enzymes are a great source of “food” for skin. Ideally, you would grate or shred a raw potato then apply it as a face mask. It is excellent for clearing blemishes and aids in the prevention of pimples, whiteheads and blackheads. The acid in the potato scrubs away dead skin cells and is an excellent exfoliant too. And talking of exfoliating products, many homemade scrubs and face masks contain oatmeal which, due to its large particles, is really good to use when removing dead or dry skin cells that clog up pores.

Honey is a popular favourite to use at home – usually just to pep up the skin and give it a good healthy glow. Ideally, you would apply a liberal layer of honey on your cleansed face and wash it off once it has dried. You can add a few drops of lemon to it if you wish.

Turmeric, the amber yellow powder normally used as a spice in Indian cookery, has many beneficial properties and is recommended for many other ailments other than acne. Traditionally, a little bit (about 1/4 teaspoon) of turmeric powder, mixed with a few drops of lemon juice, 2 tablespoons of chickpea powder (another product used in Indian cookery) and about 2 tablespoons of plain yoghurt is an excellent paste for rubbing into the skin. Leave this on for about 1 minute then wash off. This gives the skin an instant glow and leaves it feeling clean and refreshed. The same paste mixture can be used on the face as a deep cleansing face mask. Leave on for about 10 minutes until it dries. Then rub it off, this rubbing action will stimulate the skin and also aid in sloughing off dead skin cells. Now wash off with cold water. This is one of the best kept indian beauty secrets.

You can try and experiment for yourself until you find something that feels just right for you. The turmeric and chickpea paste might be too drying for you, so perhaps you can try honey (with or without lemon juice). That’s the beauty of homemade treatments; they can be tailor made to your exact taste.

So you see that what you find in your refrigerator, larder or spice rack is not just something that you can use for cooking. In fact, with a little imagination, you’ll find you have effective homemade acne treatments right under your nose.

Lasik Surgery In New York: What’s In It For You?

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Most people who are in the market for Lasik eye surgery prefer to find Lasik vision care centers in larger cities, hoping to find an eye surgeon who’s experienced and yet won’t charge and arm and a leg for Lasik eye correction surgery. While that endeavor might be easier said than done, the city of New York does offer a wealth of gifted and experienced doctors that will be able to provide you with the eye correction services that you need.

Thousands of eye doctors are listed in various directories in New York City, but that doesn’t mean that they’re all licensed to perform laser vision correction. When searching for a doctor who can perform such surgery, check not only local listings, but listings with surgeons as well as medical certification boards to ensure that the person you’ll be dealing with is trained and experienced in various Lasik procedures.

The Lasik website often lists New York surgeons in its database for the convenience of patients, but looking around and getting a second opinion is always a wise choice when it comes to any type of surgery. After finding out that Lasik surgery can take as little as ten minutes per eye and that the procedure can be done on an outpatient basis, people often think that the procedure isn’t a surgery after all when it is. Lasik surgery procedures and methods have constantly evolved and improved over the past decade, though there are always risks when performing any kind of surgery, laser directed or not. Many Lasik eye surgeons concentrate of the field of eye refractory and utilize the most advanced laser technology at their disposal. Because of this, Lasik eye correction is extremely expensive, despite its short procedures. However, finding a location that will work with you on payments is becoming easier and more convenient for those searching for just the right doctor. Since most vision insurance companies don’t cover the costs of Lasik eye surgery, because they feel it’s an elective process, it’s easy for some people to hunt for bargains.

Bargain hunting when it comes to your eyesight is not such a good idea. Remember, this is surgery on an irreplaceable body part, and care and common sense should prevail when searching for a doctor to perform the delicate procedure. Saving a few bucks is not conducive to going cheap. Most Lasik eye surgeries cost around $2,000 or more an eye. Finding special deals and offers for less may seem tempting, but keep in mind that that’s just a very basic cost for minimal work. In addition, costs will be added to that base, so always ask ahead of time what is included in the cost quoted to you.

New York is one of the most common locations for people obtaining Lasik eye surgery, followed by Los Angeles. While many people don’t want to travel that far to obtain the procedure, balance the cost of travel with the level of experience you’ll be receiving from doctors who have performed thousands of surgeries over one who has only performed dozens. In addition, competition helps to lower prices, so it is increasingly possible to find doctors who offer Lasik procedures at reasonable rates. Just make sure that when you’re shopping around to not focus so much on cost as you do on expertise, experience, and if possible, feedback provided from other patients who have undergone the procedure.

Knee Arthritis

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

While you may be worried about what the various factors are that cause knee arthritis, it may come as a complete surprise to you to learn that running is not a main risk factor in spite of the fact that medical opinion on the subject is almost evenly divided between those who think it does affect your knee arthritis and those who think it does not. Some studies that if a person keeps his or her mileage to below thirty miles, the risk of contracting knee arthritis is not very high.

Such studies obviously raise the question as what are the best exercises to treat knee arthritis, and some suggest aerobic exercises could play an important role for treating the condition. It would be wise for a patient of knee arthritis to include aerobics, and also use strengthening and stretching in a complete exercise program to get best results. Patients can also choose an elliptical trainer for your knee arthritis and they are generally available in fitness clubs.

The advantage of using an elliptical trainer for knee arthritis is that it allows you to move in a way that lies in between the movement of a bike and that of a stairclimber. You can keep your feet on the pedals while you get a smooth elliptical motion that does not involve any impact, which results in better cardiovascular workout as well as a low-impact workout.

You can also choose to swim in order to improve your knee arthritis, as this exercise too will give you a good cardiovascular workout and it is also not an impact activity. However, it may not be very suitable if you have a shoulder problem as certain strokes could lead to aggravating your shoulder problem even more. Nevertheless, for knee arthritis it makes for an excellent choice and you should go ahead and swim without fear of any repercussions.

You can even consider using a stationary bike that is ideal for aerobic conditioning and it is yet another non-impact activity, though for your knee arthritis condition, you should ensure that the tension is very low and you must start off slowly to prevent the risk of worsening your knee condition. You can also use it for quad strengthening as well as for stretching the hamstring.

You should not use a treadmill for your knee arthritis as this is an impact activity that would make your knee condition get worse. Keeping in mind these activities and exercises, you should be able to deal well with your arthritis problem.

Inflammatory Arthritis

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Arthritis is a disease which presents itself in many forms, and inflammatory arthritis is one of these. The term ‘inflammatory arthritis’ refers to those conditions of the joints that involve the immune system and inflammation. You will generally notice that your inflammatory arthritis pain will tend to appear first in the morning and then eke off after you have been sitting still for a while or simply moving around doing your daily activities. This distinguishes it from degenerative arthritis, which is a form of arthritis where the pain worsens towards the end of the day, rather than at the beginning.

The development of inflammatory arthritis is quite different than any other type, and many forms of it are autoimmune disorders, in which the body basically works by viewing its own tissues as being foreign, rather than recognizing them as its own & as a result this ends up causing inflammation.

The symptoms of this form of arthritis are also quite unique, and the most characteristic symptoms of the inflammatory form of arthritis include: pain and swelling of one or more joints, stiffness in the joints, swelling of the muscles and joints, and cramping. These symptoms may appear after a minor illness, such as a flu or cold for instance, or they may even instead be associated with a period of emotional stress that you may be going through.

The most important thing of all is prevention, and this means making sure that you get in regularly to see your doctor and get full examinations, so that they can keep an eye on your health. You have to watch out for any of the listed signs and symptoms, not only for this particular form of arthritis but the others as well, so that you can start treatment as early as possible.

Although there is really no surefire way to completely prevent arthritis, early treatment is the best method and so you need to take all of the necessary steps and precautions in order to look out for yourself and your health as best as you can.

Electrolysis Hair Removal – Is It Right For You?

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Is electrolysis hair removal the solution for those many men who spend countless hours a month on their daily shaving routine? A few men are lucky enough to be able to get away with shaving every other day. The same number of men have skin so sensitive that they bleed every time they shave and begin each day with the pain and discomfort of the post shaving blues. Some men are also looking for a back hair removal solution. These men may be interested in electrolysis hair removal.

Likewise, women too, in America anyways, must shave their legs and armpits on a regular basis. And for some women hair grows in the most unsightly places such as on the upper lip or other areas of the face. Many women have eyebrows they believe are too thick to be considered attractive. Many women in China actually tattoo their eyebrows on and shave the actual hair off. Many of these women may also be interested in electrolysis hair removal.

Electrolysis hair removal is so attractive to people because it is permanent. If done correctly, the hair that is treated will never grow back. This is a very tempting option for men who are sure they will never grow a mustache or beard in their life. It’s even more tempting for women who have unsightly facial hair such as, mustaches, sideburns and chin hair.

The Downside Of Electrolysis Hair Removal

There is a huge disadvantage to electrolysis hair removal. Because the procedure involves treating each hair one by one, it is extremely expensive to have done. This is not because the procedure itself is costly or complicated, but because you must pay for the expert’s time. For example, treating a woman’s legs could cost anywhere from $10,000 to $20,000.

Another downside is that the procedure has the potential to be painful. However, I feel that this depends on the person. For example, some people are not fazed at all when getting a tattoo, while others can’t bear the pain. If you are going to consider electrolysis hair removal, you’ll have to consider your threshold for discomfort. It can take dozens of hours longer than getting a tattoo.

There are cheaper options for having electrolysis hair removal treatment, like doing it yourself in your own home. For those who are serious about using this treatment but are a little short on cash may want to consider this method.

Does Wu-long Tea Work For Weight Loss?

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

A lot of people are talking about wu-long tea lately. There are fantastic claims about wu-long tea’s slimming properties, as well as its ability to reverse aging, clear skin problems, and protect against heart disease. Several websites proclaim that they have the only “real” brand of wu-long tea that works. So, lets explore the truth about wu-long tea.

What is wu-long tea? It is nothing new. It’s been around for centuries and here in America for many years. It is usually know as oolong tea, one of the most popular teas found in Chinese restaurants. The spelling of wu long is just a different phonetic way of writing the Chinese name for oolong tea in English.

Oolong (wu-long) tea comes from the same tea plant that green and black tea comes from. The differences between the tea types is the amount of fermentation the plant goes through after harvest. Green teas are not fermented, while black teas are fermented. Oolong (wu-long) teas are slightly fermented, then the fermentation process is stopped, giving a result that is something between a green and a black tea.

Does wu-long (or oolong) tea really work for dieting and weight loss? A Japanese study by the University of Tokushima School of Medicine compared Japanese women who consumed either water, green matcha tea, or oolong tea after a meal. The results found that oolong tea appeared to increase energy expenditure by 10%, green tea by 4%, and water not at all. So, according to this study, wu-long (or oolong) tea burns more fat than green tea, and more fat is burned when drinking wu-long or green tea after a meal.

The study also found that wu-long (or oolong) tea has half the caffeine of green tea and half the levels of EGCG, green tea’s cancer killing compound, so if you want the cancer fighting benefits of tea, you get more from green tea. If you want the weight loss benefits you get more from drinking wu-long (or oolong) tea.

There is also some evidence that wu-long (or oolong) tea provides other health benefits such as increased calorie burning, reduced carbohydrate intake and healthier teeth and skin, although more research needs to be done on the subject.

So, is drinking wu-long (or oolong) tea going to help you lose weight? I don’t know. Everyone is different, but it seems to have helped many people (including Oprah) lose weight. Wu-long (or oolong) tea is lower in caffein than many other beverages and it’s high in antioxidants, which help reduce your risks of cancer and other diseases, so drinking a pure natural tea can’t hurt much to try. Add a little stevia if you want a natural sweetener in your tea.

So, do you need to buy an expensive brand of wu-long (or oolong) tea to get the fat loss benefits? Please don’t waste your money on prepackaged name brand type wu-long tea. Any good brand of oolong tea you can buy in a tea store will work. There are different varieties of oolong teas, but often they are just a matter of taste preference, so experiment and try to find the varieties you like the best and will drink the most, for the best benefits.

The Best Ways To Deal With Anger

Thursday, July 5th, 2007

Anger is an emotion that you feel when something irritates you. It can be just a small annoyance or full blown out rage. Your perception of anger was learned, in the form of beliefs and values that were instilled in you. Usually, in the early stages of your emotional development. When any of your beliefs or values are questioned or transgressed, you may feel anger. The degree of intensity depends on your state of mind at the particular time of the incident.

Your feelings of anger are either expressed, as in the form of arguing or physically lashing out, or suppressed. Suppressed anger causes negative emotions to dominate, which can lead to depression. It can also express itself as a physical ailment such as high blood pressure.

Expressing anger is said to be your better alternative. Although it may bring you some relief, it also has its downside. It may compound the problem and it can also affect you physically. One of the physical side effects is that it lowers your immune system. What would be one of the best ways to deal with anger?

Release. The first thing you need to do is to recognize and admit that you are angry. Never pretend you are not angry when you know you are. It is widely accepted that people who always want to be in control seem to suffer mostly from outbursts of anger. When you are angry, you will notice that you stop breathing periodically. You may tend to hold your breath, so keep breathing with intervals of deep breathing. Then, recognize the problem for what it is, and not for what you think it is. After all, you are dealing with somebody else’s beliefs and value system. Just tell yourself, they also have a right to express their opinions.

When you do get angry, much of the blood in your brain flows to the back of your head. It goes to the primitive part of the brain were it automatically prepares you for fight or flight. The frontal lobes of the brain (in the forehead are) are associated with thought, pleasure, creativeness, and calmness.

Simply put two fingers on one side of your forehead and your thumb on the other side, and just gently hold them there while breathing without any pauses. The blood will flow back to your frontal lobes, bringing about some calmness. When you feel relaxed and the issue or issues don’t not bother you anymore, release your finger and thumb from your forehead. And of course you can also apply this technique to someone else, and it is especially effective with infants.
